i made sort of a breakthru to at least one woman the other day...she is my single mother next door neighbor,we were hanging out since i have two little ones of my own.She was in the process of cleaning out her closet and we are similar sizes,so yeah for me.....i love free clothes. i found a few things that i really liked, but wanted to try on first. So imagine me seeing her smiling before i put the shirt on, and after my head is through, she has a wide-eyed look of shock....here's the thing.i don't shave my armpits.
So she pulls herself together, trying to sound casual, sharing a story of her cousin who does the same thing.
And the inevitable-she asks why...
The first thing i say to her is one simple question in return-
why do you shave your armpits?
She looked very confused,very......she couldn't really tell me.
Then the learned replies soon followed....better hygeine,it's more professional, ect.
This is what i told her....your hygeine would only be affected(and this is true for everyone)if you stopped showering every day...which i do,shower every day....and i know people who don't shower for a few days, with hair all over ,that doesn't affect their health at all. And it's more professional for whom? Your boss?co-workers? To me ,wearing shirts that even show your armpits isn't very professional.( I am very modest person to begin with.)
I don't feel as though i have to follow what this country considers to be beautiful...and what's that? Thin as possible, shave your body hair, cake that makeup on, spend your money on surgeries that somehow transform you to beautiful, ect. Beauty to me is being you, even if your personal choice is to shave, bless you for it.
Having that bit of hair under there isn't going to change anyone, look to the inside.
My main point was this...Human beings were created with a complex plan,as is with all living things, why screw around with nature?
And even though i know this will not change this woman, which i wasn't even trying to do by the way, it opened her eyes to a larger world. She totally understood and wished that someone had shared these points with her when she was younger.
It felt good.

Re: new, with a story
Fri, December 31, 2004 - 11:09 AMThat's so awesome--what a great story and a great reminder! I am in total agreence (is that a word?) with you about societie's definition of beauty. Most of it is created by hollywood and the media and the bag of tricks they have.
I would love to start shifting that perspecive to the radiance of our inner beauty. I just know we can do it--one woman at at time!
Happy New Year!

But i do miss my lovely and very fresh tufts- just have to figure out the post birthing hormonal issues with body fragrances. But i used to think that not only is unerarm hair natural oina woman but can actually be sexy. -

Re: new, with a story
Mon, June 13, 2005 - 2:59 AMHere is a story along the same lines.
Many years ago I was looking after two kids. The 5 year old girl one day notice the hair under my armpit. Her mother was in the room next door so she walked across and asked her mother if she had hair under her arms.
The mother answered :"No I don't" never explaning that she naturally would but decided not to keep it and shaved it or whatever she did.
I wonder what that poor girl ended up thinking when she reached puberty and notice that she did have hair growing in her armpits.
